Dealing with geographic data

Introduction

This section of the Everest Wiki deals with geographic data and computers. Some would call it GIS, others would prefer spatial analysis, computational geography or geomatics; we just say geography. There is information on how to collect or otherwise obtain geographic data, how to display it as a map, and how to transform, extract, and analyze such data.

Theory

Geographic position

Geographic data capture

Global Positioning System (GPS)

Mobile mapping

Georeferencing of textual locality descriptions and guidelines to do this

Data formats, transformation, and scripts

Getting climate data out of netCDF files

Arc/Info AML scripts

Corona images with ArcMap

Projecting GeoTiff data using GDAL

Extracting Quickbird (or other high resolution) images from Google Earth

Orthorectifying images with Geomatica
